The Merchant is a supporting character from Jazz Jackrabbit 2.
Details[]
The Merchant always appear during the stages. If you've collected the number of coins he asks for during the current stage, he will teleport you into a secret area of the map, usually filled with lots of crystals and ammo pickups.
Since coins don't carry over between stages it's impossible to stack them up to use on another stage.
